Llawhaden Castle is situated not far off the main A40 trunk road near Canaston Bridge. Built by the affluent Bishops of St. David's Cathedral, probably the 1st Norman Bishop founded it in the 12th century. It has been rebuilt after its capture and destruction in 1193 by the Welsh Lord Rhys and then deserted when the resident Bishop moved to another residence near Carmarthen. Much of this fortification remains despite it been left to decay in the 16th century. Well worth a visit.
